"Savushun" (also known as Siavashan or The Mourning of Siavash) is the name of a ceremony that dates back to pre-Islamic times, held in remembrance of Siavash, a legendary hero of ancient Iran. Siavash was killed unjustly and in exile; from the blood he shed on the ground, a plant was said to have grown. This imagery—the plant rising from Siavash’s blood—serves as a metaphor for the people’s awakening and uprising against oppression and tyranny.
